there goes my bandstand!

so growing up my parents used to talk about how important American Bandstand was to pop music. I always wanted to watch it, to see what it was about... I never could because it got cancelled. At the time I really didn't understand how an important show could get cancelled. and I always wondered, why do important shows end? Sure, with shows like Seinfeld and Friends there are only so many stories you can tell... But how do important variety shows like Saturday Night Live or the Tonight Show end?

There is a show on MTV I've written about a few times... it's called TRL... Now I haven't watched an episode in probably 5 plus years... but there was a time when I was in high school when i wouldn't miss an episode... it was my American Bandstand... That show literally made careers... Carson Daly, N'SYNC, Eminem, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera all have TRL to thank... (or we all have TRL to blame depending on how you look at it)...

It was a show that embraced different types of music... Pop, Rock, Punk, Rap, Alternative, Emo, Screamo, R&B, Country, and even Tom Green... (my bum is on the ship, the battleship)

I can remember when Mariah Carey was a crackhead and called in to give Carson Daly drunken tirades.

I can remember when a nerdy guy in the crowd named Brian Warner was interviewed... The next time he was on the show he went by the name Marilyn Manson...

I can remember when Elmo was on there... and i remember thinking how awkward it must have been for Carson Daly to be talking to some dude's hand...

and when Time Square had to be shut down every time N'SYNC or the backstreet boys showed up...

I can remember when voting for P.O.D.'s "Alive" felt like the christian thing to do...

I can remember when Tom Green had to retire his song about sticking his bum on things...

I can remember when Liam Gallagher (of Oasis) was being interviewed by Carson Daly and Liam totally ignored Carson for most of the interview by tooling around the set staring blankly into space....

and it wasn't just music, Movie stars went on the show to promote all of the latest movies... BIG HUGE NAMES!

sometime in November TRL will go on air for the last time... kinda sad really...
