So, as the year ends, I decided I am gonna do some Top 10 lists... or Top 5 lists, if i run out of ideas... feel free to make your own lists on the topic...
these are not necessarily albums that came out this year, but ones that were introduced to me this year...
10. "Taylor Hicks" by Taylor Hicks
I know I am a glutton for punishment by starting with a guilty pleasure CD, let alone, one by an American Idol winner. I must admit at first I didn't like this album, but as time passed it proved itself quite the sleeper, and with time I caught myself not being able to pass it up on my iPod.
9. "Public Warning" by Lady Sovereign
Yet another guilty pleasure. I mean white brit pop rap? love it or hate it, that is the question... I love it... it's delightfully infectious.
8. "Five Score and Seven Years Ago" by Relient K
ummm yeah... it's good... it feels like relient k is slowly leaving the quirky pop punk mold and becoming something more meaningful... time will tell... after deathbed, I am hoping for a relient k concept album... thoughts?
7. "Memory Almost Full" by Paul McCartney
the old guy still has it... "Dance Tonight" and "End of the End" are major highlights... i have never been a big fan of McCartney post-Beatles, and I hate to say this, but he may still be relevant...
6. "Nothing Left to Lose" by Mat Kearney
A late entry due to the fact that I just got the record, but I can see why the guy has so much hype. I don't know how I feel about his rap/singing parts, but I am hooked...
5. "Unearthed" by Johnny Cash
I feel like this "Boxed Set" should be considerably higher ton this list, and ANY Cash fans should really consider plopping down the big ones for this one, or at least putting it on a Christmas list. it's remarkable!
4. "Illinois" by Sufjan Stevens
Sufjan has been around a while and I have tried to resist, but after seeing him in a documentary about Danielson, I got sucked in...
3. "Oh! Gravity." by Switchfoot
Jon Foreman is genius. if you can dig up the acoustic version of American Dream, you will thank me.
2. "Polarity" by The Wedding
Not really a well known band but one of the best written records in a while. They may not be everyone's cup of tea because of the rock, but it was the record that was the soundtrack of my summer.
1. "The Swell Season" by Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova
Ummm yeah I LOVE LOVE LOVE this record... so much goodness... i was introduced to this duo via the indie film "Once" which shows them performing most of these songs... The DVD comes out tomorrow so go and rent/buy it... thanks and good night....
