A New Law
Derek Webb

VERSE 1
Dont teach me about politics and government
Just tell me who to vote for
Dont teach me about truth and beauty
Just label my music
Dont teach me how to live like a free man
Just give me a new law

PRE CHORUS
I dont wanna know if the answers arent easy
So just bring it down from the mountain to me

CHORUS
I want a new law
I want a new law
Gimme that new law

VERSE 2
Dont teach me about moderation and liberty
I prefer a shot of grape juice
Dont teach me about loving my enemies
Dont teach me how to listen to the Spirit
Just give me a new law

PRE CHORUS
I dont wanna know if the answers arent easy
So just bring it down from the mountain to me

CHORUS
I want a new law
I want a new law
Gimme that new law

BRIDGE
Whats the use in trading a law you can never keep
For one you can that cannot get you anything
Do not be afraid
Do not be afraid
Do not be afraid

This one is a little harder to crack into than the last, because it talks about politics and Christianity Which are always touchy subjects I really hope you were able to watch the video because it is pretty genius. In case you cant watch it for some reason it is basically the Song with video of people wandering around with blindfolds on doing everyday tasks. An extremely brilliant way to let you know the overall message behind this song.

For what Im about to say, I may be looked down upon by my fellow christians. Because I am gonna say some things that go against Pop Christianity. Think what you want I am just sharing my opinion and you are welcome to yours

Its extremely true that most of us follow rules or standards in our religions that we dont always understand. We believe that we must become republicans and support war in order to be Christians. I wonder what the Prince of Peace would say about His followers supporting a war? What ever happened to loving your enemies? (Matthew 5:44, Luke 6:27, Luke 6:35) What happened to turning the other cheek? (Matthew 5:39 Luke 6:29) I dont recall there being anything in the New Testament about getting even youre your enemies. Maybe someone can find that for me

Christians tend to be easily misguided by what our so called leaders tell us to do. Did we ever stop to think that maybe something was wrong in getting even? Are there better ways to stand up for innocent people than guns and explosives? I believe love is the answer. At least thats what Jesus said for us to do. What would loving our enemies cost us? Probably everything. I dont know everything, but I do know that love wins.

Its not just with war though. There are many other ways that we follow blindly. What happened to the freedom that came with Christianity? What if straight laced Christianity were more like our roughneck Christ? The guy whose first miracle was to turn water into wine wine? (gasp) The guy who impolitely invited himself over for dinner. The guy who hung out with tax collectors, poor people, sailors and prostitutes? And loved them? What if we did that? What if we fed the hungry and clothed the poor like we were supposed to? It would be revolutionary.

I want a new way to be a Christian. Its not easy. But do not be afraid to stand up for whats right. Do not be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. Do not be afraid to ruffle the feathers of Christendom.
