A King & A Kingdom... Track 03 of 11

A King & A Kingdom
Derek Webb

VERSE 1
Who's your brother? Who's your sister?
You just walked passed him
I think you missed her
As we're all migrating to the place where our Father lives
'Cause we married in to a family of immigrants

CHORUS
My first allegiance is not to a flag, a country, or a man
My first allegiance is not to democracy or blood
It's to a King and a Kingdom

VERSE 2
There are two great lies that Ive heard:
The day you eat of the fruit of that tree, you will not surely die
And that Jesus Christ was a white, middle-class republican
And if you wanna be saved you have to learn to be like Him

CHORUS
My first allegiance is not to a flag, a country, or a man
My first allegiance is not to democracy or blood
It's to a King and a Kingdom

BRIDGE
But nothing unifies like a common enemy
And weve got one, sure as hell
But he may be living in your house
He may be raising up your kids
He may be sleeping with your wife
Oh no, he may not look like you think

I know that political statements around 9/11 are a bit cliché. Thats why I waited a day to write this one. But know that its mere coincidence that this one pops us during this time. Its not so much a political statement as it is a Christian one.

I think we as Christians, have lost sight of what Christianity really is. Weve forgotten who our brothers and sisters are. Weve forgotten that we are all Gods children and brothers and sisters. Somehow along the line we got this crazy idea that Americans are Gods chosen people, His golden gift to the earth. And that simply isnt true. We are so prideful and conceited. I think too often patriotism comes before Christianity. I cant stand it when we sing patriotic songs in church. It boils my blood. Jesus wasnt an American.

We get upset about courts getting rid of the Ten Commandments, yet we dont follow them in the courts, in our churches or even in our own homes. We say things like God Bless America and we have our heads so far up ours collective butts that we dont realize that God has already blessed America, and maybe its time for us to return the favor or at least use the resources Hes given us to further His Kingdom.

Maybe we need to stop looking for someone to attack overseas and start looking at what the Enemy has done here at home. How about instead of protecting our nation, we focus on the war at home, maybe we should focus on the desensitized generation in our school systems.

Maybe if we poured half of the money weve poured into this war into the starving and disease stricken in Africa, maybe just maybe, we could have changed the world.

Maybe its time we put down our guns and pick up the cross.

Im not a Democrat. Im not a Republican. Im a Christian.

My first allegiance is not to a flag, a country, or a man. My first allegiance is not to democracy or blood. It's to a King and a Kingdom.
