i've been watching "Big Ideas for a Small Planet" on the Sundance Channel (some repeats available of Bravo). It's an eco-friendly show that covers all kinds of eco-friendly ideas and how they influence different parts of our lives such as fuel, prayer, eating, creating, driving etc... it's pretty cool... anyway i was watching the episode called "wear" (this episode is dedicated to clothes/fashion) and wanted to share and interesting quote about things we wear and how much energy is put into things that we buy... ironically it's from Carson Kressley from queer eye...
"Every time that you make a garment there's often times associated byproduct, ya know. It grows as a little tiny cotton plant in a field in Alabama. It has pesticides put on it so that the boll weevils don't eat the cotton. Then it's driven to a factory. And then it has to be processed and in the processing chemicals are added to make it easier to mold into a thread. Then it's woven into a garment. That goes on a truck to get from Alabama to your local mall. Which is a big space that uses lots of energy and electricity. And then it goes into our hands at the store. And then we buy it and than it goes into a plastic bag. And then we drive it home. We put it on and then we throw the packaging away. I'm gonna get all "Zen", but it's like throwing a pebble into a pond of water and the ripple effect is a lot greater than we would ever imagine."
