So Jamie asked what i thought about the new Switchfoot record... I started a reply and it erupted into a huge reply, so i thought i would just post it as a new blog...
i have always been a huge fan of switchfoot... even before there first album came out 9 and a 1/2 years ago... So i have been a fan since the beginning, before every little punk kid thought they new every little thing about them... I don't mind new switchfoot fans, just don't pretend like you know every little thing about them... Ever heard of a little song called Chem 6A? can you name a song with a Charlton Heston reference? do you have any idea who Sarah Masen is? Didn't think so...
How does "Oh! Gravity" stack up to the previous albums? i'm not sure... new switchfoot albums have always had to sit and grow on me... it usually takes 4 or 5 listens before I really fall in love with a record of theirs even though i consider them one of my top 3 favorite bands... (anyone guess who the other 2 are?)
I was a little leary about how quickly this record came out after the nothing is sound, i know it was over a year, but it just felt too soon... but i can see the relevance it has with what is going on in the world today...
so far this is by far their biggest political/social record to date... it really feels like they are trying to say something with this record... it just seems really personal... i guess with Nothing is Sound, you had a little of the political aspect with "Politicians"... but it just seems different this time around... i guess this record is closer to home than the last... It wreaks of an honest and personal question marks? "Faust, Midas, and myself" is a type of song from them i have never heard before... It's really just Jon sorting through the idea of being a Christian and having money... And it's really an interesting concept... Obviously Jesus said it's hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God... So what is a successful Christian musical artist to do? I really love "American Dream" because it deals with this same idea... i was able to get my hands on an acoustic version of that song, (it came as a special download with the CD I bought)... I am totally in love with that song... It think it really says a lot about how they have handled success...
I also love "Awakening" and "Circles" too... And "Yesterdays" (A song about the death of a loved one) really spoke to my heart...
Is it my favorite switchfoot album? Only time will tell...
