My Enemies Are Men Like Me
Derek Webb
VERSE 1
I have come to give you life
And to show you how to live it
I have come to make things right
To heal their ears and show you how to forgive them
PRE-CHORUS
'Cause I would rather die
I would rather die
I would rather die
Than to take your life
CHORUS
How can I kill the ones I..m supposed to love
My enemies are men like me
I will protest the sword if it..s not wielded well
my enemies are men like me
VERSE 2
Peace by way of war is like purity by way of fornication
It..s like telling someone murder is wrong
And then showing them by way of execution
PRE-CHORUS
CHORUS
QUOTE
Non-violence is the answer
To the crucial political and moral questions of our time
The need for man to overcome oppression and violence
Without resorting to violence and oppression
BRIDGE
When justice is bought and sold just like weapons of war
The ones who always pay are the poorest of the poor
CHORUS

It's crazy how we Americans are so quick to get into a fight. Whether it be over gossip, sports, getting cut off in traffic, someone doing something bad to us. Little things set us off. Think about some of the things that really get you fired up. Are they things that really matter? When was the last time you got fired up because of injustice? Something that really mattered?
Why do we get mad at people? Obviously some people are never gonna change. But are we really the ones who should get to decide that? Your enemies are people like you. They are victims of the fall. And while some things are "inexcusable" behavior and need to be dealt with in a suitable fashion (whatever that may be), let's be honest, we tend to judge people on more inconsequential things...
Christ came to show us how to live rightly. Christ didn't judge tax collectors and prostitutes (the "scum" of the earth) like we do... And he even went as far as telling chief priests and elders that the tax collectors and prostitutes would enter the kingdom of God ahead of them (Matthew 21:31).
Once we come to the realization that there is no "us" versus "them" things will change... Once you realize that we are all one in the same... A big giant family effectively torn and destroyed by the fall of mankind... Your enemy is your sibling... Once we realize that we are all God's children and creation... We might be slow to pull a gun on a brother... War seems trivial next to the poverty of our loved ones... Maybe if we realized that, we wouldn't want to kill our brothers... And i'm not just talking about with guns and bombs, but with words and judgement, and by letting our children die or disease and hunger...
