sorry for all the Big Brother posts... haha... i am seriously addicted to that show... i need help... i know...
anyway... it seems like a bunch of things have been bringing me to a deeper understanding of what i already knew to be true in my heart... so i will share...
We typically interact with Christ as though he were some sort of product we would buy... I find myself treating God as if I were baking a cake, i add in all these ingredients, i do step 1, step 2, and step 3 and all of the sudden i magically get what i want... growing up i had the idea that following Jesus was a 3 or 5 step program for which i was designed to fail... making me basically doomed... no where in the Bible does there appear to be a 3 or 5 step program that answers all of my questions... we've reduced Jesus to a set or moral ideas, where if we don't anything to terribly wrong, we watch our mouths and go to church we are super christians... this type of christianity, simply doesn't work... it doesn't fulfill our restless souls... our culture has warped Jesus into some sort of super product we can use and then when we get bored, just throw Him away... Jesus isn't a blender... He's not a George Foreman grill... He's not a product... Sure, people are selling "Jesus" everywhere you look... On tv, movies, music, t-shirts, breath mints, bumper stickers, bracelets, books... Some people sell Jesus like He's on clearance... Sometimes i wonder how Jesus would react if He were here... If Jesus came now instead of 2000 years what would He be? He's got enough merch to be considered a rock star... Would he be a celebrity? Would the tabloids take a picture of him leaving a club with Paris Hilton? Or talking to a hooker at starbucks? (like the woman at the well)... Our consumerism has clouded the reality that Jesus isn't a marketable man... Odds are, he probably wouldn't be a rock star... We have this idea that if we follow Jesus all of our problems will be gone... But that just isn't the case... No where in the Bible does it say that... Jesus asked Peter to follow Him... and Peter ended up being crucified upside down... He asked Paul to follow Him and Paul was in and out of prison for talking to people about Christ... that doesn't sound like a walk in the park to me... It's not the most appealing sales pitch i've heard...
Anyway, so if Jesus doesn't work as a product, if we can't use 5 step programs to get what we want out of Him, then what kind of relationship are we supposed to have with Him? Maybe our thinking of Jesus of a rock star is wrong... You know when you like a band you go and buy their cd's and their t shirts, their hoodies and all that jazz... Maybe the relationship that we have with Jesus should not be the relationship we have with our favorite band or our favorite t.v. show... (i.e. big brother) haha... maybe our relationship with Christ is the relationship of a bride and her groom... maybe our relationship with God is that of a Father and a child... Maybe the main thing that we are missing in our walk with Jesus, is Jesus... We get wrapped up in the devices of "christianity" (good morals, Jesus t-shirts, and Kirk Cameron) and we leave Jesus out... We leave the relationship part out... I have nothing against good morals... but good morals are not following Christ... sure it's part of it... but it's not all of it... If we were lovers with Christ... things would be different... For one, we wouldn't cheat on a lover... or at least we would recognize that we shouldn't... We'd be accountable... we'd show affection... we'd defend them to the point of death... we'd stay up late thinking about how great they are... you'd hate spending time apart...
I love to be in love with Jesus... I only hope that you will long to love Him too...
If we were lovers
Like we were meant to be
Open arms, broken hearts
All the world to see
If we were lovers
Loving like we say
Oh the ghosts of doubt
Would crash and burn away
If we were lovers...
-all star united
